To setup broadband connection and to get broadband access, you will need various components depending on the broadband type. The primary component will be a computer (desktop or laptop) or a mobile phone in case you use mobile broadband. To get broadband service, you have to sign up with a service provider like BT or Virgin Media.
Computer
Computer
If you are still using a computer that is five years old, it is time that you change it. Go for a latest PC that has good processor speed and a minimum RAM of 512 MB, larger hard disk (so that you can download and store files, videos etc) and comes with connections like USB slot etc. If you plan to use the existing PC, check its features that it can be connected to modem or networking card supplied by your ISP.
Modem/Router
Belkin 4-port Router
When you sign up to an ISP, you will usually get a broadband kit that will essentially include a modem. For ADSL broadband connection, you will need ADSL modem with an adapter that will connect the modem and the phone into the micro-filter. ADSL modems can be connected to your PC using Ethernet or USB plug, if router is used, you can connect more than a PC to share the broadband connection depending on the service.
Network Card
Ethernet Adapter
For cable broadband, you will use a special modem provided by your cable broadband provider and you will also need networking cable like CAT-5 and a network card.
Linkys Wireless Router with Access Point
If you want to setup a wireless network, you will need a wireless router that comes with Access Point or as a separate unit and other accessories like anten``nas etc. Also make sure that the laptop or the PC that you will use for wireless internet access can work with this hardware.
Micro-filters
Micro-filter
Micro-filter is a small component that is plugged into the phone socket. The main function of a micro-filter is to split the phone line so that you can use the phone line for broadband access and telephony simultaneously. Micro-filters also reduce line noise thus ensuring better connection.
Firewall
Firewall enabled routers help to protect your PC from security risks like hacking or phishing etc. You can also use a good, software based firewall that will do the same thing.
Broadband Service
If you want to use ADSL broadband, first, you need to check whether the local BT exchange is enabled with the broadband service you have chosen. There are plenty of deals available today and therefore, before choosing the best deal to suit your needs you will need to browse through broadband comparison sites, reviews and the latest news on ISPs & their services.
If you already have Virgin TV in your home, then you may upgrade it to add Virgin Media broadband. The installation may not take more than seven days. If you go for new connection, have a look at the bundle offers from Virgin Media to get cheaper deals.
Bear in mind the following things when you sign up for broadband
Most broadband services will require you to commit to a minimum 12 month contract. However, most ISPs allow you to cancel the services within seven days from the date you place the order.
A few ISPs like BT, PlusNet and Tiscali offer money back guarantee after taking some activation charges. You may cancel the services within this period and claim the money back.
If you are satisfied with the service, read the terms and conditions of the service contract before you confirm the order. If you think that any point needs clarification, just ask the ISP to explain it.
How to setup broadband connection?
When you sign up for a minimum contract, the ISP will do all the installation work for you. If you go for Virgin Media cable broadband, you will sign up for a 12 month contract that will include one off 25 connection fee means they will install your connection and that’s all. However, with ADSL broadband, you can sometimes avoid setup cost if you can make your installation and setup which is not as difficult as it sounds.
Here is a quick guide to install and setup an ADSL connection:
Step 1:
Sign up for ADSL broadband service available in your area. For this, first, use check availability tool that you can find in many of the broadband comparison sites. If the local BT exchange is enabled with the service you have opted, you can order the package online or call the ISP on sales service telephone number.
Also make sure that your phone line can receive ADSL or ADSL 2+ whichever you have chosen, just by calling BT to test it, if needed, ask them to upgrade the line so that you can get trouble free connection. For all that, it may not take more than 10 days for your ISP to activate the connection.
Step 2:
You will get broadband kit from your ISP as soon as you pay for the package. ISPs usually provide you with a modem and at least one micro-filter. You can also buy additional micro-filters that may not cost a few more pounds.
Step 3:
Before you connect modem, you will have to install the a few drivers in your hard disk. The installation CD that you get along with the broadband kit will have all drivers you need and also help you to start the setup procedure in easy steps. Once you have installed the drivers, you will be asked to restart the PC.
Step 4:
Next, connect the modem with your PC. Most modems can be connected to the USB port in your PC or you may use hub or Ethernet port for the same purpose.
If you are using Ethernet port, connect the Ethernet cable with your modem while the other end of the cable should be plugged into the Ethernet port.
If you are using USB modem, connect it to the USB socket in your PC.
When you start the PC, the windows will detect the modem and automatically install it as you have already installed the required drivers on the hard disk.
If you want to use a wired or wireless router, you will need to configure the settings with the help of software provided by your provider.
Step 5:
Now, connect the modem and phone to the micro filter and connect the micro filter to the BT phone socket.
Make sure that the modem is properly plugged into the micro-filter and the same way check that the micro-filter is properly fitted into the phone socket as improper connection of micro-filter often leads to connection problems.
Once, you have made the proper connection, the micro-filter can now enable the phone connection to be used for phone calls and broadband access simultaneously.
Broadband Connection
Step 5:
After completing the setup process, switch on your PC and the modem. You will see two green lights - one for power and another for ADSL status. If you could see continuous light, it indicates that the connection is proper and you are getting ADSL signals.
Step 6:
Now, click on the log on icon. Once you have entered the valid user name and password, you will be connected.
